In modern homes most of the electric lines are concealed. Electric wires run through conduits hidden inside walls. In new homes there can be damages in the wires due to pulling but it won’t be visible since they are concealed. Therefore, before stepping in a new home it is better to get the electric lines checked by an electrician.
The Circuit Breaker must be checked by turning it ON and OFF. Make sure the switch is tight. If it is found to be loose then it must be repaired or replaced.
Check all the sockets and switches and make sure all of them are working. See that there are enough power points as per your needs. Double check the sockets where you plan to connect the heavy-duty electrical appliances (ie. AC, Refrigerator, TV, Washing Machine, Microwave etc.).
Check the switches for electric shock. Do not ignore even if there is a mild shock. Even a mild shock means faulty earthing. You must get it corrected immediately.
Find out about the electric supply and power cut situation in the local neighbourhood. If the power supply is poor, make sure you have a power back up.
Inspect the switches and sockets in the bathroom. Make sure they are not given in the wet areas. Sockets and switches must be located in the dry area.
Check the sockets and switches in bedroom. Check if the connection for AC and its location is as per your interior plan. If not, make changes before you move in.
They say “a stitch in time saves nine”. Do remember this if you feel checking the electric lines before moving in a new house is not necessary. This will save you from future costly repairs.
